Introducing Our New Trios 3Shape Orthodontic Intraoral Scanner

To improve the comfort and overall orthodontic experience of our patients, we recently invested in a 3Shape Trios 3 Intra-oral scanner.

An intra-oral scanner is an electronic device which is used to construct 3-dimensional, digital models of your teeth and bite. This is done with a sensor that takes a video, or hundreds of photos per second, of all the surfaces of your teeth.

After a scan is recorded we can use it for multiple applications. We may use the information to diagnose and make a treatment plan for complex cases, create Invisalign aligners, create orthodontic appliances such as palatal expanders, or even use a 3D printer to make physical models of your teeth. 

What does this mean for our patients?

Fewer goopy and gaggy impressions for our braces patients. With an orthodontic intra-oral scanner we are able to use digital scans of your teeth to make study models prior to and following orthodontic treatment with braces. Traditionally this is done with goopy impressions to make a record of your teeth before and after treatment.

We can even use the scanner to make your retainers after orthodontic treatment.

Fewer goopy and gaggy impressions for our Invisalign patients. Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign often requires multiple sets of impressions: one at the beginning of treatment, sometimes one or more may be needed mid-treatment, and one at the end to create retainers. A scanner allows those messy impressions to be replaced with digital scans of your teeth and bite. 

Less waiting for Invisalign aligners. With traditional Invisalign treatment, your doctor takes an impression of your teeth and ships it to the Invisalign factory. Then, Invisalign scans and converts the physical impression into a digital one. After that, Invisalign goes to work on creating the aligners that your doctor has prescribed and approved. With a digital scanner, Invisalign receives the digital model in less than one hour, eliminating several business days of waiting.

Better fitting Invisalign aligners. In an analysis of over 400,000 Invisalign cases, digital impression cases reported 7x less problems with the way Invisalign aligners fit.
